Went south for the week

Driftless Trout

Last week I headed south in search of warmer weather and clearer streams. With temps in the upper 60’s and low 70’s I could finally leave the layers at home and focus on fishing. Browns and brookies were extremely active sub-surface, taking small midge flies and larger copper johns. Nymphing seemed to out fish all other tactics, but I did land a couple of nice browns swinging black wooly buggers as well. All in all a few days of fishing in nice weather resulted in 30+ trout landed and a nice sun burn.

Steelhead

As I type, the rain continues to fall on the south shore of Lake Superior. A short drive this morning showed rivers that were completely out of their banks and roads nearly flooded. This is both good news and bad news. The bad news, no fishing will be occurring for the next couple days while we wait for the rivers to calm down. The good news, there should be a good run of fish come in on this super high water. If there's one thing I know about steelheading, “with rain comes fish”.

Hopefully I’ll be heading out on a boat tomorrow to chase browns and cohos with my good friend Tommy Hicks. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Also, If anyone is interested in a guided fly fishing trip for steelhead or stream trout please contact me for more info!
